Archaeometric analyses are generally conducted using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and petrographic microscopy on ceramic thin sections (TS), and are carried out on several samples, mainly in order to define the compositional characteristics, to hypothesize as to the possible provenance and, ultimately, to use the acquired data in the most effective manner for conservation and restoration purposes. The specimens are selected after careful sampling and the initial observations of the ceramic make-up by means of stereomicroscopy, in order to formulate a preliminary classification and assessment of the state of preservation and degradation of the samples.
